Centella Asiatica

Titrated Extract of Centella Asiatica has a long history of use in Europe as a wound-healing drug. It is also known as Hyrocotyl(e).

Combined with other skin-regenerating and soothing agents, such as L. Proline (an essential amino acid), Aloe Barbadensis extract, Cucumis Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia extract and Mimosa Tenuiflora bark extract, Centella is a gentle, all-natural and highly effective therapy for rosacea, proven effective both in clinical trials and in everyday rosacea treatment practice.

Centella (also known as Gotu Kola, Tiger Grass and Indian Pennywort) is a perennial plant which grows in a creeping manner and grows vigorously around the Indian Ocean.

The use of Centella Asiatica in the management of dermatological conditions has a long tradition in its native regions where it is used for the following:

  1. As a support for the faster healing of small wounds;
  2. In the treatment of burns, itching and insect bites;
  3. As an oral preparation for atonic wounds and hypertrophic healing.

Despite its long history of traditional use, Centella only appeared in the Codex in 1884 (relatively late for Western medicine) and the first dry extract was not created until 1941, three years before its triterpenoid molecules were isolated by the French scientist, P. Boiteau.

The three triterpenes responsible for the healing and regenerative action of Centella work to stimulate the skin's fibroblasts, resulting in an increase in the tensile strength of the tissues and the improvement of its natural defenses.

A fortunate side effect of this action is an increase in skin firmness, making Centella an ideal therapy for the treatment of rosacea in patients with maturing skin, or anti-aging concerns.

The active constituents of Centella Asiatica are pentacyclic triterpenoids which are found as genins (asiatic and madecassic acid) and heterosides (asiaticoside and madecassoside).

Especially interesting for the treatment of rosacea are the triterpenoidic molecules, which have both regulating and activating functions that act on the collagen present in the skin (and in numerous other organs if so used).

Intralderm Soothing Gel for Rosacea contains a perfectly standardized extract of Centella Asiatica and is of pharmaceutical quality. Isolated in purified fractions, free genins (asiatic and madecassic acids) and asiaticoside, these active ingredients are combined in constant proportions to guarantee optimal activity.

The addition of L. Proline amino acid, Cucumis extract, Lavandula Angustifolia extract, Aloe Barbadensis extract and Mimosa Tenuiflora bark extract complete the treatment by providing soothing, lightly astringent, lightly moisturizing and toning effects for the capillaries and skin as a whole.

Mimosa subtly improves circulation in the skin to help clear persistent redness and blotchiness.

Studies have shown that wound chambers exposed to therapeutic levels of Centella are characterized by increased dry weight, DNA, total protein, collagen, and uronic acid contents. Peptidic hydroproline was also increased, showing an increased remodeling of the collagen matrix in the wound. Asiaticoside exerted a preferential stimulation of collagen synthesis and was active at low doses only. In short, skin health is enhanced in biologically meaningful ways.

In addition to collagen, the three components were also able to stimulate glycosaminoglycan synthesis (glycosaminoglycan synthesis was also shown in a study by DelVecchio et al, 1984.). In healthily functioning skin, the major components are collagens type I and III.

In ending, Centella Asiatica and specifically the Centella Asiatica as found in Intralderm Soothing Gel for Rosacea and as associated with the therapeutic benefits of Cucumis , Lavandula Angustifolia, Aloe Barbadensis and Mimosa Tenuiflora bark extracts has revealed astonishing curative properties for the treatment of fragile capillaries, skin damage and a multitude of skin disturbances typically found in rosacea cases.

Moreover, based on the test results outlined above, Intralderm Soothing Gel for for Rosacea is clearly of great value with regards to supporting overall skin health
