Ant health food was recorded hundreds of years ago. In his master book Compendium of Materia Medica Li Shi-zheng (1518-1593) , the greatest Chinese herbalist and practitioner, explained sorts of ants, properties and life environment, and described how the ancients got ant's eggs to eat and prepared the ant food for the chief of a tribe and noble lords. The master said, the ant is highly sensitive to the weather and able to detect a rainy day.

The ant health food and pharmacological experts in China have found in experiments that the extract of ants (Polyrhachis vicina Roger) contains over fifty nutritional elements, including 26 kinds of amino acids, of which eight are essential to the human body. 100g dry ant contains 30~70 protein. It also contains vitamins B1, B2, and B12 and such trace elements as Ca, P, Fe, Se, Zn, Mn. Pharmacological tests and clinical trials have shown that certain properties of the ant can be used to combat arthritis, rheumatism, liver ailments, asthma, and even cancer. In addition, according to recent biological studies, it has been found that the extract of ants is a broad-spectrum immunopotentitor, which increases the amount of RNA and DNA in cells as well as the number of immune cells. In general, ant health food is helpful to supplementing energy and blood, increasing sexual desire and physical strength, building up vital energy, cleaning the lungs and liver, and just generally prolonging life. Ant extracts, when mixed with such herbal tonic ingredients as Radix Pseudoginseng (this legendary ginseng root is prized doubly higher in China than Ginseng), radix astragali and acanthopanax senticosus, yields even wider therapeutic benefit. This is very effective in the treatment of Alzheimer's, back and leg pain, rheumarthritis, dental looseness, neurasthenia, insomnia, trichomadesis, loss of appetite, and impotence.
